Marty Kubicki

Marty Kubicki resurrected the lost art of Lithophanes – etched porcelain panels that come to life with vivid detail when lit creating stunning three-dimensional images. The Lithophanes are still handcrafted utilizing the same techniques developed over a century ago, but with a contemporary appeal.

To create these stunning Lithophanes, Marty begins by carving the image into soft beeswax, lit from behind so he can see the progress of his work. Then, a plaster mold is taken from the original masterwork. Fine porcelain clay is pressed into the plaster cast and fired to achieve the ideal density and translucency. These fine plaques are then set into durable frames to create functional works of art.

Production of Lithophanes tapered off in the late 1800’s. By the early 1900’s, the techniques were all but forgotten. Marty has ushered in a new era for Lithophanes utilizing classic techniques for a modern home.
